I buried a handful of crushed expired stool softener tablets in the soil around my August late-season turnip transplants. 3 weeks later, this is what happened

was docusate sodium. I crushed 8 tablets total into a coarse powder with the back of a spoon inside a zip-top bag. The tablets were chalky and broke into small granules, not a fine dust.

I applied that crushed material around 6 turnip transplants in one section of the row, roughly 12 inches of bed space. That worked out to a little over 1 crushed tablet per plant. I scratched the powder into the top 1 to 1 1/2 inches of soil in a ring about 2 inches away
